Fine Cotton editioned print by Richard Lewer.

Fine Cotton was not a great racehorse but he made headlines when involved in a substitution scam. A syndicate involving racing’s elite purchased an identical looking brown horse with white markings on his hind legs but the horse became lame just before the race so another horse, Bold Personality, several racing grades higher was purchased. The horse was a different colour, so the syndicate applied Clairol dark brown hair dye to the bay coloured horse. But they forgot to peroxide his hind legs so on race day they resorted to painting his legs with white house paint. The heavy betting action, decreasing odds and huge improvement of ‘Fine Cotton’, who went on to win the race, raised the racing stewards suspicions who immediately launched an investigation. ‘Fine Cotton’ was trotted back to the weigh-in area with paint dripping down his legs.
