Hereafter

‘Hereafter’ explores humanity's eternal quest for psychological and physical safety, manifested through the interplay of symbolism, superstitions, rituals and belief systems.  Drawing upon symbolic representations of life and existence beyond, Roberts explores the profound existential inquiries that have plagued human consciousness throughout history.

From a secular background Roberts seeks refuge in the act of creation, grappling with the existential void through the tangible manifestation of her innermost fears and aspirations.  Continuing her exploration of conventional notions of perceived comfort and safety in everyday objects and spaces, she delves into the multifaceted symbolism of communal places of worship, which can serve as sanctuaries that evoke a spectrum of emotions, from awe-inspiring reverence to profound personal insignificance. These places serve as a stark reminder of humanity's perennial quest for meaning and solace in times of crisis, evoking the dualities of fear and safety, education and indoctrination, judgment and consolation.

A myriad of ceramic vessels, crafted in an almost ritualistic manner, serve as conduits for the artist’s contemplation as she seeks solace from the torment of the unimaginable - infinite nothingness. Roberts weaves her own narrative through each vessel; the symbolism adorning them serves as a visual lexicon of mortality, each motif carrying echoes of ancient superstitions, rituals, mythology and belief systems. From the terracotta warriors of antiquity to the intricate symbols of sacrifice and rebirth, Roberts draws inspiration from the depths of human history, intertwining her own imagery with universal themes of transcendence and transformation. Each vessel carries within it the weight of human longing and aspiration - to know the unknown and to attain the unattainable.  Her creations unveil the ultimate paradox: these ceramic vessels evolve into 'memento mori'.  They have the potential to outlast not only their creator but entire civilisations.

‘Hereafter’ invites viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and discovery, traversing the delicate boundary between the known and the unknown, the tangible and the ethereal.  Through the intimate dance between form and symbolism Roberts offers a glimpse into the timeless struggle to seek refuge from the inescapable.
