A TRAVEL GUIDE

Artist Statement
Everywhere you go, there you are. But time and experience changes who you are and where you want to go next.
The two quilts An Odyssey and A Crossroads mirror one another in their exploration of time, labour and experience. An Odyssey contains 441 individual hand embroidered motifs caught together in a net-like form. Whilst generally universal these symbols have multiple different interpretations based the individual’s life experiences, cultures and perspectives. Together they form a library of icons, swept up and caught by the viewer and artist.
A Crossroads is a hand-pieced quilt made from scrap fabric from friends and family. Woven and sewn together these salvaged fabrics form a never-ending series of crossing paths and intersections. Scattered throughout are a series of clocks that demarcate indecision, commitment and opportunity.
Included in the exhibition are a number of rotating travel sign posts. Instead of normal geographic destinations and distances, these guides point towards esoteric and existential places both real and imagined
